FIRST CLIMBING OF MOUNT DAMAVAND
Mount Damavand is a potentially active volcano. It has a perfect cone-shape summit. It is located in the central part of the Alborz Mountain Range in the north of Iran, on the southern coast of the Caspian Sea. Damavand Volcano is 5671 meters high. It is the highest volcano in Asia, the highest summit in the Middle East. It is also the second highest volcano in the northern hemisphere.
The earliest recorded ascent of Damavand was in 905. Abu Dolaf Kazraji climbed Damavand for the first time. Then, three centuries after his ascend, Yaqut, the great Byzantine/Arab geographer, attempted to climb Damavand. He did not succeed. However, the local people guided him with a detailed description of the summit. Later, he incorporated Damavand climbing into his famous “Dictionary of Geography.
Apparently, climbs of Damavand were not uncommon during the early 13th century. It was before the Mongol invasion when Hulagu Khan swept and destroyed everything before it. Thompson’s ascent was in 1837. At that time, locals would go Damavand climbing regularly to gather Sulfur from the summit for commercial purposes. Thompson himself mentioned Climb of Damavand in his article in the Royal Geographic society magazine of 1838.
DAMAVAND TREK, SYMBOLISM, AND MYTHOLOGY
Damavand is a notable part of Persian mythology. It is the symbol of Iranian resistance against intruders and invasions. Also, it is an inspiring force to topple foreign rule in Persian poetry and literature. In Zoroastrian texts and mythology, the three-headed dragon Aži Dahāka was chained within Mount Damāvand, forever. In a later version of the same legend, the tyrant Zahhāk was also chained in Mount Damāvand. He was a cruel ruler being defeated by Kāveh and Fereydūn. The mountain holds magical powers according to Shahnameh (Book of Kings, a book by Ferdowsi the great Iranian Poet). Damāvand has also been named in the Iranian legend of Arash the archer (as recounted by Bal’ami.
Today, some camps of Damavand refers to these myths. For example, one of the camps in the northeast route is called ‘’Takht-e-Fereydun’’ meaning Fereydun’s Throne. There is also a camp named ‘’Simorgh’’ on the west ridge. It refers to a mythical bird who was mentioned in Shahnameh.
Mount Damavand picture is now even depicted on an Iranian banknote. The origins and meaning of the word “Damavand” are unclear. Some prominent researchers believe it probably means, “The Mountain from which smoke and ash arise”. It is mentioned alluding to the volcanic nature of the mountain. (Dam~A~Vand is Cloud (Ash)~Breath~Mountain).
DAMAVAND GEOGRAPHICAL POSITION AND DAMAVAND TREK
Damavand is in the middle of the Central Alborz range. It is adjacent to Varārū, Sesang, Gol-e Zard, and Mīānrūd. Near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, It is close to Amol County, Mazandaran Province, 66 kilometers (41 miles) northeast of Tehran. So, It is so easy to get to there to climb Damavand.
Mount Damāvand is the 12th most prominent peak in the world. Also, it is the second most prominent in Asia after Mount Everest. It is the highest volcanic mountain in Asia. Damavand is part of the Volcanic Seven Summits mountaineering challenge. For that, a lot of mountaineers take Iran tours to climb Damavand. There is no mountain above 5000 meters in Europe. Damavand is 510 meters and is so beautiful with perfect corn shape summit. It is also relatively easy to ascend. All the above has made Damavand climbing very popular among Europeans.
Snow covers the entire mountain in winter and upper parts in other seasons. It has a narrow summit crater usually covered with snow. This makes Damavand trek magical and attractive. Moreover, the snowy white peak with its regular Lenticular Cap Cloud is the most beautiful sight of Iran. Many beautiful peaks, of the Central Alborz Chain, surround Damavand. You can enjoy ascending these along with Damavand Climbing. The view of this huge mountain looks more attractive from away than close up. On a clear day, it is visible far from 250 km away.
DAMAVAND TREKKING SEASONS AND TYPICAL WEATHER
In theory, one can climb Damavand in all four seasons. However, the best season is of course summer. It’s advisable to take Damavand tour from May to September. Also, you can hike Damavand in early October. In this period the footpaths are generally free of snow. You can approach public transportation to the base camp easily. Consequently, for the stable and warm weather, it’s a bit crowded. So start Damavand climbing on Saturday. It is the first day of the week in Iran. In this way, you can enjoy the Damavand trek the most.
In spring, it is popular to go on Damavand ski touring. The weather can get unstable. So you need to be expert with the local climate to spot the right weather. Otherwise, the haze, fog, and mistiness can significantly impair the horizontal view.
Fall is the cold and dry season. The weather is relatively stable. It is less stable than summer and more so than spring. Late October and early November has the lowest snow level.
In winter, however, the extreme cold weather and the wind itself is quite a challenge. Hence, you need proper tools and kits to climb Damavand. Temperature can get down to -70 centigrade and the speed of wind can go up to 100 Km/h. However, there is almost no risk of avalanche in winter. Summits for well-equipped mountaineers are risk-free. Despite that, must-haves are high altitude boots and proper sleeping bags. If you are planning to take Damavand tour in winter, catch the good weather window. It is typically 3-4 days in every fortnight.
Before all of our Damavand tours our guides will double check the weather forecast to reassure about a safe and successful ascent. Anyway extra summit days will be considered in case of a bad weather surprise.

Me and my girlfriend went with Alibabatrek for an adventurous trip in the mountains. They proposed a 5 day trip to Tochal and Damavand.
We had very good contact through whatsapp in preparation of the trip, every question answered. Once in the trip began, the guides were very well prepared and it was very nice to walk and talk with them. In the evening he did everything so we wouldn’t get cold, giving us extra blankets etc… read more on TripAdvisor

I went with Alibabatrek on Damavand and I can say it was a very professional company starting from the communication prior to the trip to the mountain guide who made sure that I really reach the top even though I was close to quit fighting the off-season conditions. Not only were the professional, but they noticed that it was my birthday on the hike day and they surprised me with a cake, gave me a true feeling of porfesional “european company” combined with …read more on TripAdvisor
Perfect to climb Mount Damavand
September 4, 2018 on TripAdvisor
They are a very correct, reliable company. We could organize our tour through email. We got all necessary information in advance.
During the Damavand trekking tour our guide was very experienced mountaineer, and but he doesn’t speak English, but we got a translator, and this way the communication worked.
Alibaba could help everything what we ask: transfer from airport, booking accommodation. with a local bank card, and with a wifi router to use mobile data,
we were very satisfied with them. Read this review on TripAdvisor
Climbing Damavand
July 8, 2018 on TripAdvisor
I fully recommend Alibabatrek to anyone thinking about climbing Damavand, or doing any other tour in Iran. From the start it was clear they both knew what they were doing, and were genuinely interested in giving us as good an experience as possible. Our guide Ali was the youngest Iranian to have climbed a +7,000m peak, and he had been up Damavand more times that he could remember. His knowledge of the mountain was second to none and their programme of daily acclimatization hikes made all the difference in getting us to the top. They managed to make the trip feel a lot more like a holiday with friends than an organised tour, and it was clear how much effort they put in to shaping the trip around clients’ specific interests. The transport to…. read more on TripAdvisor

Great Experience! Fantastic Rates!
Oct 30, 2017 on Alibabatrek.com
I really enjoyed my experience with this extremely hospitable company! Everything was taken care of from A to Z. Before embarking on my Mount Damavand I was not sure which tour to book, or if I even wanted to go on a tour with them in the first place. The helpful staff and management at Alibab Trek spent more than an hour on the phone with me explaining each detail of the 3 day tour. I was sold! I frequent Iran and will certainly be booking their Mount Alamkooh tour for sure!
